How to teach letters to a 2-year-old
Keep it short and playful: a few minutes a day, one letter at a time, starting with the letters in your child’s name. Say the letter, trace it with a finger, find it around the house, and stop while it’s still fun.

Five small steps
Start with their name
The first letter of their own name is the one they’ll care about.
One letter at a time
Stay on it for a few days. Repeating beats rushing.
Say it, then trace it
Name the letter while a finger follows its shape.
Find it everywhere
Signs, cereal boxes, books. Point and say it together.
Stop while it’s fun
Two or three minutes is plenty at this age.
Questions parents ask
- Is 2 too young to learn letters?
- There’s no rush either way. At 2, letters are one more thing to point at and talk about, like colors and animals. Follow your child’s interest.
- Capital or small letters first?
- Many parents start with capitals: straight lines and simple curves, easy to see and trace. Our free pages use capitals.
- Should a 2-year-old hold a pencil?
- A finger or a chunky crayon is plenty. Pencils can wait.
- How long should we practice?
- A few minutes, when your child is fresh. Skip a day whenever you like.
